About the Pub

A pub of this name has existed on this site since at least 1791. The present newly refurbished small bar (with basement), not far from the Temple, Aldwych and the Royal Courts of Justice, was designed by the great pub architect Nowell Parr for the Style & Winch brewery and built in 1928 in a dark Tudor style. It may be confused (by bemused visitors) with Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese - which is further towards the City on Fleet Street. The pub was spot-listed Grade II on 24 December 2015, Historic England list entry no. 1431970.
