Remarkable Pubs
About the Pub
Prominent pub located by Victoria Park, one of a dozen run by a long-established pubco called Remarkable Restaurants. Period features including bar-back and fireplaces, small side room adjoining the main bar, and a spacious dining room at the back with views over the Park. Apart from a handful of real ales, with two guests from smaller breweries, the pub is notable for a relaxed atmosphere and its substantial rear patio.
Historic Interest
Local listing:- Formerly the Royal Hotel this building is a fine example of a mid-Victorian freestanding public house in the Italianate style and imitating the style of a small Italian palazzo and entirely stuccoed. The main interest is on the western façade; three storeys and five bays. At the first floor – the piano nobile, fine central arcade of three rounded bays separated and framed by Corinthian pilasters and surmounted by an entablature consisting of a cornice and a plain frieze – a consciously Palladian effect. This triplet is flanked by large square windows surmounted by an entablature of cornice and frieze. Attic storey is plainer – five small round headed windows but proportionate and handsome. A cornice separates the piano nobile from the ground floor – five handsome bays tall round headed windows separated and flanked by pilasters. There are large plate glass windows which may have been in the original design (as plate glass was being introduced at this time.) The south-facing façade looking on to the park contains four tall square windows at the first floor and rounded windows at ground and attic level, one of the windows in each group being blind. Less interesting than west face but dignified and handsome.
